The mission of the Hudson Montessori School is to foster a
Montessori educational environment conducive to each child's
unique qualities and abilities for the development of social, emotional, and
reasoning skills that are essential for a lifetime of independent,
creative thinking and learning in the world community.
Founded 54 years ago, Hudson Montessori School is proud of its heritage as the nation's 13th oldest Montessori School. The school first opened its doors in July 1962, led by a small group of parents and educators who were intrigued and excited by the educational methods of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952). They believed in the basic Montessori tenet of encouraging a child's self-realization of his/her own worth and potential.Located in Hudson, Ohio, the school began with one Children's House class of three to six year olds. Over successive decades, HMS has transformed its facilities from the original one room schoolhouse in downtown Hudson to the current 12 acre property on Darrow Road offering programs from Parent/Toddler through Middle School. In 1968, the founders purchased 5 1/2 acres of land on Darrow Road, and a new building was constructed. The next four decades would see multiple expansion phases - each one barely keeping pace with the growth of the school population.
A 2003 expansion added a new Lower Elementary classroom to accommodate increased demand for our elementary program. This was followed a year later with the completion of an extensive interior renovation including the reconfiguration and rebuilding of interior rooms.
August 2005 marked the completion of a 12,500 ft. addition resulting in a new facade to the building. Classroom spaces, including new Upper Elementary, Art & Music, a new library and office spaces completed this large addition to HMS. That year also marked the opening of the Middle School charter class in the 'North House'.
Our school became accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) in 2007, followed by accreditation by the Ohio Association of Independent Schools (OAIS). In 2009, we proudly became an "All Schools Attuned to All Kinds of Minds" School of Distinction.
Today, the school consists of a Parent/Toddler class, three Children's House classes for 2 1/2 -6 year olds, two Lower Elementary classes for 6-9 year olds, two Upper Elementary classes for 9-12 year olds and the Middle School for 7th & 8th level students. HMS serves students from Hudson and over twelve surrounding communities.
Over a half-century from its founding, Hudson Montessori School continues to offer a Montessori educational experience that provides excellent academics, innovative programs, and a nurturing, child-centered environment.
